The mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe for Life. Now for over 20 years, we are a lay apostolate formed as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our mission is to display the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on multiple highway billboards in strategic locations in St. Louis and Illinois, Indiana and Texas so far. The billboards stand as a witness to the Blessed Mother’s plea, “I want to be on the billboards,” which she spoke to me, directly and clearly, in 2002, five months following the tragic events of 9/11. When our group began this mission, we did not fully understand the work of Our Lady and her mission.
But now, 20+ years later, everything is coming to light as we witness people falling away from their faith. They do not acknowledge the Mother of our Creator and our true Spiritual Mother. Evidently, this is the reason she has inspired us to place her on the billboards, so that she can show herself as a loving Mother to bring her children to conversion. Our Lady must have foreseen the decline of morals in our country, and she desired that God's people be brought to conversion. The billboards display an important message, “Love your babies, born and unborn,” and an offer of help—24 hours a day—for anyone passing by. The hope is to inspire mothers to bring their children to full term and to love and properly care for them.
Today, 20+ years since our mission began, literally billions of cars have driven by the billboards. With the endorsement of the Respect Life Office of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Our Lady of Guadalupe for Life currently shines on 12 highway billboards, changing hearts and leading more and more of her children to the love of her Son, Jesus. We know that Our Lady melts hearts, for reports have come in of mothers who
cancelled their abortion plans, and of people who returned to the church after viewing our loving Mother on the billboards.
Before each new billboard is erected on the highway, it is blessed. The billboards currently displayed have been blessed by Cardinal Raymond Burke, Bishop Robert Hermann, Bishop Joseph Coffey, Bishop Edward Rice, Bishop Mark Rivituso, as well as Fr. John Wetmore, Fr. John Seper, and Fr. Thomas Keller. While the billboards are the “outward” sign of our mission, the “silent witness,” prayer and sacrifice are the “inward” aspects of our mission to save lives and save souls. For 20+ years we have been making daily holy hours before Our Lord in the tabernacle, seeking divine guidance for our billboard project. Our Lady has taught us that through many sacrifices, rosaries, novenas, and holy hours, she is able to save lives on the highway.
We know that the mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe for Life comes from above. Our founding Spiritual Director, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Robert Hermann, put it beautifully when he said to me, “You know that the mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe for Life is important because the Good Lord sent his Mother to tell you to put her on the billboards.”
